1st Triathlon June 14, 2008

So this morning was my first ever triathlon, I’ve only been training for it for about 5 days.  I haven’t swam more than a 100 in probably about 2 years, but I was still 3rd out of the water.  The bike was about what I expected little more hilly than I would have liked but oh well.  Still averaged about 22mph and came in from the bike still 3rd.  The run was ok, it was through the woods and so it wasn’t so hot, but only being able to see 50feet infront of you makes a run seem really slow.  Well I ended up 5th overall (out of 350) and won my age group so I’m pretty excited.  I’ll probably log some more running hours so I don’t slow down so much when I get off my bike.  Well that’s about all, my legs are sore so I think I’m going to take a nap.

hey matt,
good job getting out there and doing tris. i did a few at the end of college and for a year or 2 after before i got serious about rowing.
after rowing in college (la salle university in philladelphia) in a program that was essentially a club sport (didn’t learn how to row very well but learned to work hard) i rowed for vesper boat club. i learned to scull there as a way to be more versatile and i was coming up the ranks just as they added lightweight events at the olympics. it’s certainly a lot easier not to have to have a partner every time you want to go out. spent the better part of 6 years training full time. training took me to quite a few cities in the u.s. and i was fortunate enough to make the pan am team in 1995 wanted to make a go for the 2000 olympics but wrapped it up in 1999 and settled in seattle. i’m at pocock rowing center where we have an excellent elite/pre-elite sculling program. i only row recreationally now, but am pretty involved in the program. we’re hoping to grow the program quite a bit next year.
i rowed opening day for the first time this year. it was pretty cool, but i don’t think it can compare to the spectacle of the head of the charles.
nice to have a fellow rower around here - now there’s 2 of us!
o.k. that’s enough for now…hope to get to know you better. keep up the good work!
